Camp Connection: A TBRI Family Camp
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Buddy?
A Buddy is a one-on-one volunteer who is paired with a child or youth attending camp. Buddies offer support, encouragement, and connection throughout the camp experience, modeling TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) principles.
Do I need experience to be a Buddy?
Knowledge of TBRI principles is encouraged. Training will be provided, and you’ll be supported by experienced staff. A heart for kids and a willingness to learn and connect is what matters most.
What are the responsibilities of a Buddy?
-
Build a trusting relationship with your assigned camper
-
Participate in activities with them (games, crafts, group, etc.)
-
Support regulation strategies and help meet their needs
-
Be a positive, safe, and consistent presence
What is the time commitment?
Volunteers are asked to commit to the full duration of camp (September 17-20, 2026). This includes a pre-camp training, the camp itself, and an evaluation survey following camp. Pre-Camp training will be conducted via zoom for two hours with multiple dates and times to choose from.
Where is camp held? Will I need to travel?
Camp will be held at Twin Lakes Camp and Conference Center (155 Milner Rd. Florence, MS 39073) on September 17-20, 2026. Directions and travel details will be provided ahead of time. Accommodation and meals will be covered for all volunteers. The estimated time of arrival for Buddies at camp is 1:00pm on 9/17/26. This is subject to change as the schedule is finalized.
Will I be alone with a child?
No. All Buddies are paired with children in group settings with staff supervision. Safety and accountability are top priorities.
What kind of support will I have at camp?
Camp is staffed with trained professionals, TBRI practitioners, and team leaders. You’ll have ongoing guidance, support, and time to regroup or ask for help as needed.
Will I have my own sleeping area?
Buddies and families will have separate sleeping quarters. Buddies will be divided into four lodges. Each buddy will have their own private room and bathroom with shared common spaces. Photos and a layout of the lodges can be found here: https://twinlakescamp.org/conference-center/facilities/lodging/northshore-lodge/
What should I wear?
Bring clothes that you can be active in and don’t mind getting dirty. No spaghetti strap tops or halter tops. No tight, revealing or otherwise inappropriate clothing. Swimming is an option. Two-piece bathing suites are not allowed. We will provide t-shirts to wear Saturday and Sunday at camp and families and buddies will have coordinating colors. Bring comfortable shoes as there will be lots of walking. A packing list will be provided closer to camp.
What are we going to eat?
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served in the camp Lakeside Dining Hall at no cost to the buddies or families. There will be options for differing food preference and needs. Buddies can also leave campus for dinner at their own expense. https://twinlakescamp.org/conference-center/facilities/dining-halls/lakeside-dining-hall/
What amenities are in my room?
Each bedroom and bathroom will have all necessary linens. You may want to bring your own toiletries. There are dispensers with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the showers. There is NO TV or WiFi. WiFi can be accessed in the assembly hall where we will be meeting. Each lodge has a fully equipped kitchen and dining room table, sitting area with a fireplace and an upstairs lounging area.
How do I know which room is mine?
SCSCY staff will be onsite when you arrive to show you your room and the other venue spaces.
What are we going to do?
Lots of things! We will begin programming after breakfast each day. Buddies will be asked to spend the whole day with the child they are matched with (roughly 8:30am – 5:30pm) and practice connecting, empowering, and correcting skills. Buddies will have a 2 hour break at lunch time and will also have time after dinner each day to decompress and prepare for the next day.
Will there be sunscreen or should I bring my own?
We will be providing standard sunscreen and bug spray, so if you have specific needs, please bring your own.
What is there to do around the venue?
Twin Lakes is right outside of Florence, MS with Jackson, MS about a 45-minute drive. Buddies are welcome to explore the area during their free time. Twin Lakes Camp and Conference Center has many things to do, including, pickle ball, walking trails, three story three house and more. https://twinlakescamp.org/conference-center/activities/shared/
